As a board member, you will become part of a focused group of individuals who share big ideas and shape the strategic marketing future of our premier, volunteer organization – one that was established in 1937.

Board Positions

Vice Presidents

Vice presidents are responsible for all operations of their specific committee. Each VP reports directly to the president and manages all director-level positions on the committee. These positions are one-year terms. Typically, a leader serves as a director of a specific committee for one year and then serves as the VP for a second year.

Directors are responsible for all operations of their specific committee. Each director reports directly to their corresponding VP. These positions are two-year terms on the board, with the first year as the director of a committee and the second year as the VP.

The secretary is a member of the executive committee and is responsible to the president of the chapter. Traditionally, the secretary corresponds with members and others, prepares board minutes, and works with the executive director to maintain chapter historical records and keep current with AMA Chicago activities. The treasurer, reporting to the president, is responsible for monthly financial reporting to the board of directors, annual financial reporting to AMA and completing the chapter’s annual IRS filing requirements. Serves as a member of the executive committee. View the complete description [PDF]

Members at Large

A Member at Large of the AMA Chicago Board of Directors has no specific duties until assigned by the president or executive director but has the same rights and responsibilities as other board members. The position reports directly to the president. The ideal candidate is a senior-level marketer with a passion for creating smarter marketers in the Chicago area. View the complete description [PDF]

What is AMA Chicago?

AMA Chicago is a chapter of the American Marketing Association and a non-profit corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Board members contribute their expertise in specific knowledge areas to bring the chapter mission to life.

Our mission is to provide opportunities for Chicago marketers to expand their knowledge, improve their skills and grow in their careers through access to leaders and peers in the field and skill-building content.

Board member requirements

  • Possess a passion for the mission of AMA Chicago and serve as a chapter ambassador for the Chicago marketing community
  • Be fiscally responsible for AMA Chicago, including actively planning and approving its budget
  • Be seasoned experts in their respective discipline, with leadership experience and the ability to manage teams through influence and collaboration
  • Serve as CEO of their position by bringing new ideas to the chapter, evaluating their feasibility and engaging in their successful launch
  • Assist in recruiting future board members and volunteers who possess the skills, commitment and energy to make significant contributions to advance the mission of AMA Chicago
  • Have schedule flexibility to attend morning and/or evening events sponsored by the chapter as appropriate
  • Attend monthly board meetings and other leadership sessions as determined by the chapter operations calendar
  • Contribute 10 or more hours per month
  • Serve a two-year term beginning at the start of the fiscal year in July
